Director of Worship and Arts
Berkeley Mt. Zion is a contemporary church located in the beautiful city of Berkeley, California serving a diverse age demographic and community. We are passionate about building a congregation that is intergenerational and thriving. We are a loving and grace-filled church that accepts people where they are, while challenging them to grow and develop Christ-like character. We are currently searching for a gifted, people-oriented, high energy leader to join our staff as our Director of Worship and Arts.
Position Description
The person who fills this position must passionately believe worship is to the glorification of God and be able to creatively merge traditional and contemporary musical environments. We seek someone who has strong managerial skills; will manage our entire Worship and Arts ministry, which includes: all musicians, all choirs, dancers, drama, and audio/visual ministry; will seek to foster growth in all areas of the music ministry and select music that is edifying, balanced in genre using instruments and soloist as appropriate. The ideal candidate will have a heart for ministry and will possess a great love for God’s people and has mastered skills in the noted areas.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Plan the corporate worship services in consultation with the Lead Pastor, doing so with conceptual forethought and musical appropriateness
Ensuring that all the musical and technical aspects of the service are ready and working properly
Oversee song selections, media presentation, sound, and coordination of musicians and vocalists
May serve as worship leader during Sunday gatherings and develop other gifted worship leaders to expand the team
Prepare for and lead weekly rehearsals of music and special creative teams as planned (i.e. dance, drama, banners, readings, etc.)
Shepherd, develop, and disciple worship and arts volunteers
Collaborate with the Lead Pastor to implement the strategic objectives of the church, including leading change to effectively reach and engage new generations
Develop a long-range worship plan and establish short and long-term goals for worship elements and promote growth in all worship services
Participate in Senior Leadership Meetings
Will accompany church to outside worship engagements and supply musical leadership
Qualifications & Abilities
A mature faith and walk in Christ demonstrated by a life that is growing and developing
Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience in ministry leadership
Demonstrated excellence in leading worship with strong vocal ability
Ability to reach a broad musical demographic traditional to contemporary
Gifted musician experienced in leading worship
Strong cultural competence and the ability to minister effectively in a multi-generational setting
Ability to organize one’s self and the tasks necessary to accomplish larger goals
Excellent interpersonal skills
One or more of the following Spiritual gifts: leadership, teaching, exhortation
A team player with a commitment to the unity of the staff and the church
Teachable and curious, continually pursuing personal growth
Ability to commit to the beliefs, mission, vision and values of Berkeley Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Days/Hours: This will be a Part-time staff position. (Less than 40 hours a week)
Compensation: Salary and benefits are negotiable and commensurate with experience.
